Experiment 1 – Cold Showers and Sleep Patterns

Day 1 :

I think I’m failing already. I went to bed at about 1:20 AM, but getting up at 7:55 was a no-no. I had dreams about being OK with stepping into a cold shower. I made it out of bed around 8:40 and took a hot shower, but turned the temperature down to cold for just about 10 seconds at the end. I think it’s called a Scottish Shower? That’s the way it was recommended. It was unpleasant. I feel shaken up and tired.

Day 2:

I went to bed at 2:30, AM but I was up at 7:55 on the dot. The alarm rang and I went right up and out. I think it has something to do with all that homework I piled up for today. Anyway, I was feeling pretty sick, so I didn’t step into a cold shower. I stepped into a hot shower, and that made it a little better. I didn’t think I’d go cold today at all, but I did. Counted to 15 and then I was out. I felt like a wet dog. Unpleasant. Afterwards, in my room, I thought about how good it would be to climb back into bed. Alas, homework awaits.

Day 3:

Well, first and foremost – I did it. I may have broken some rules though. I went to bed at 1:30, and I got sleepy way before that, but I couldn’t fall asleep till after 2. My first class was later today than it usually is, so I wasn’t able to pull myself out of bed at 8. I stayed in bed until 10, but I felt so much more refreshed, that I turned on the shower, and stepped right into the cold. It was exactly like I expected – unpleasant at first, but within ten seconds I was fine. So, I turned up the temperature and then turned it down at the end. Felt good.

Day 4:

To bed early, and up early. Went to sleep at 12:30-ish, I wasn’t feeling great yesterday and wanted some rest. I was up around 6:20. Hot shower, cold end. I’m getting used to it. In the cold, if I stay still, I adapt. Moving is unpleasant though.

* * * *

I did it. 9-ish, the day has slowly been dawning on me, so I said “f&ck it,” and stepped into the icy-cold water. The initial shock wore off almost instantly at how much better I felt than I expected. Uncomfortable, sure, but fine. I decided to stick it through. The whole shower was cold, and then a little colder. At some points, I almost fell completely fine, at others the prickling reminded me that I wasn’t where I wanted to be. But mostly, I was completely fine.

Day 5:

– – – – No shower. Yeah, I know. Bad day.

To bed before two. Up at 9 – ish.

Day 6:

Stepped into a cold shower. Brushed my teeth. It was uncomfortable. Three minutes later, I was out. To bed before two, woke up at 8:30, but I lounged in bed till 11.
